Holistic Dentistry: Fad or the Future?

submitted on 8 July 2023 by dentistlistings.org

A Journey Through the Mystical World of Dental Care

As I lay supine in the dentist’s chair, a tiny bead of sweat trickling down the side of my temple, I pondered the word “holistic.” Was I about to undergo some sort of New Age dental ritual, a blend of obscure herbs and ancient healing chants, to rid myself of tooth decay? My curiosity was piqued; my dental anxiety, piqued even more.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic dentistry, also known as biological or integrative dentistry, is a branch of dental care that seeks to treat not just the symptoms of oral decay and dental disease, but the underlying causes and interconnected imbalances in the body that lead to these issues. This approach considers the mouth as an integral part of the overall health of a person and seeks to address the root causes of dental problems, focusing on prevention and education, rather than simply drilling and filling those pesky cavities.

The Great Amalgam Divide

A key tenet of holistic dentistry is the avoidance of silver amalgam fillings due to their mercury content. You see, mercury is a rather controversial element, its effects on human health as polarizing as a political debate. On one hand, it’s a known neurotoxin, linked to a laundry list of unpleasant symptoms and conditions. On the other hand, the American Dental Association claims that amalgam fillings are safe for adults and children above six years of age.As I sat in the chair, my holistic dentist informed me that he would not use amalgam fillings. Instead, he would use a composite resin, an innocuous substance as white as an albino snowflake. As he prepared to work on my teeth, I appreciated his determination to keep my gray matter as unblemished as possible.

Root Canal Revelations

Another contentious issue within the world of holistic dentistry is the root canal treatment. Traditional dentists see them as a necessary evil to save an infected tooth, while their holistic counterparts argue that the treatment can lead to chronic illness due to the potential for lingering bacteria in the tooth’s tubules. The alternative in holistic dentistry is often tooth extraction and implantation, a solution that brings forth images of medieval dental practices and sends shivers down the spine.

X-Ray Expose

As I lay there, my dentist informed me that he uses digital x-rays, which expose patients to significantly less radiation than traditional film x-rays. I felt a momentary sense of relief as I pictured my internal organs remaining blissfully undisturbed by the invisible rays of doom. In addition, my holistic dentist would only take x-rays when absolutely necessary, not simply as part of an annual ritual to increase the bill.

Nutritional Nuggets

My holistic dentist also took the time to discuss nutrition and its impact on oral health, something I had never encountered during my past dental escapades. He talked about the importance of a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, as a means to prevent cavities and gum disease. In his eyes, food was not just a pleasure to be savored, but a tool to be wielded in the fight against dental decay.Of course, he didn’t neglect to mention the usual suspects in the dental crime scene: sugar and processed foods, the Bonnie and Clyde of the oral cavity. I nodded solemnly as he listed the offending items, vowing to keep my sweet tooth in check and my mouth a cavity-free zone.

Is Holistic Dentistry the Future?

As I left the dentist’s office, my mouth filled with the faint taste of mint and a newfound appreciation for the interconnectedness of my body, I pondered the future of holistic dentistry. Would it be a fleeting fad, destined to fade into obscurity like so many wellness trends before it? Or would it become a true force in the world of dental care, leading the charge towards a healthier, more balanced approach to oral health?Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: holistic dentistry offers a unique and refreshing perspective on the role of dental care in our lives. It encourages us to view our mouths as more than just a repository for food and a means of communication, but as an integral part of our overall health and well-being.As for me, I’ll continue my journey down the holistic dental path, embracing the knowledge and techniques that it offers. And who knows, perhaps one day I’ll even learn to enjoy the dentist’s chair, the whir of the drill, and the scent of eugenol filling the air.
